New Arrivals 2/17/2015 to 2/23/2015

by Alexander "Squished Fish" Smith

Kathleen went to Toy Fair in New York over President's Day weekend, and went a little crazy. We have a ton of new items (and new to us items) coming in. Stop by to check out all the new stuff.

First, Hot Tin Roof... This game came out last year, but Kathleen had a chance to try it while in New York, and it was really fun. In Hot Tin Roof you will create rooftop routes for cats to run across and become the top cat in the neighborhood. When you can unite two cats, you'll receive fish and tins, but as you use the crosswalks and patios controlled by your opponents, you'll have to pay a toll! Make use of your own network or tax your opponents in this game of cat and...well, more cats!

This last week, we've been having entirely way too much fun playing Squish, Squish, Fish. Is it the surprising amount of strategy trying to flip three different fish in a row? Is it the politicking of convincing others to not squish your fish, but those fish over there instead? Or is it the pure unbridled joy of smashing your friend's clay fish? Kathleen had very real problems holding in her laughter when she took a call playing this game, and if that's not a barometer of how fun this game is, I don't know what is.

Gold Ahoy! is an intriguing tile-placement strategy game for two players trying to control the most treasure chests. As you lay each tile, you'll be creating complex sandbars and oceans filled with treasures. If you can connect more 'entrances' to those winding sandbars and areas of ocean than your opponent, you'll take all the treasure for yourself! Create more pathways for yourself and give your opponent dead ends in this simple yet elegant strategy game.

Coconuts Duo is a game of tossing coconuts into baskets and taking them for your own. A dexterity game at its core, this game has more than a few curve balls in store for players in the form of magic cards which will force your opponent to redo their toss, use only their elbows, or even allow you to lay a card over your cups to protect them! This game plays two very well, but can expand to more players with additional copies.

Guess Who? is a classic deduction games that we're happy to now
offer. "Do they have glasses?" "Is their hair red?" "Do they have facial hair?" are all questions you'll hear as players try to narrow down possible characters and find out who their opponent has chosen and kept secret. This game has withstood the test of time and a great game to play with young ones.

Another classic that we now carry is none other than Hi-Ho! Cherry-O! This easy to understand cherry-picking game is a great tool for kids looking for a spinner game that works with number skills. Another classic, Hi-Ho! Cherry-O is sure to please.

Munchkin: Kobolds Ate My Baby adds all the humor of kobolds and baby-eating to Munchkin! Kobolds may bumble from time to ti-always, but they're (dis)organized and determined! If you want even more wackiness for your game of Munchkin, look no further! All Hail King Torg!

One Night Ultimate Werewolf Daybreak  can be played by itself or used as an expansion for One Night Ultimate Werewolf. This version introduces many new roles to fill up your sleepy little werewolf-plagued village including a Paranormal Investigator, the Alpha Wolf, and the Village Idiot! Figure out who is who, or sow chaos while villagers point fingers at each other as they try to find the werewolf amongst them.

We've had a lot of things come back in a big restock extravaganza this week. Carcassonne and Balderdash are back with new boxes, and boy are we glad to have Carcassonne back after such a long time! Betrayal at House on the Hill is back once again from another of its mysterious and unexplainable absences. Imperial and Rebel forces alike have received reinforcements in the form of more available TIE  Advanceds, Fighters and Phantoms or E-Wings and Y-Wings. We have a few more starter boxes for the Avengers vs. X-Men and Uncanny X-Men Dicemasters sets, so if you've been looking to start playing or introduce a friend, now is the time. Finally, we have a single copy of Twilight Imperium available and the first person to claim it claims the universe itself! Well, the Twilight Imperium universe at least.

Games added to our demo library this week are: Gold Ahoy!, Hot Tin Roof, Deus, Fish, Fish, Squish!

Unify China and protect its people in Zhanguo! Players take the role of emissaries of the Emperor by deciding whether to use cards to construct defenses and infrastructure...or to use them to solidify their own power. Rack up influence while making sure not to have peasants rally against you in this game of defending the realm and looking out for your own interests.

Mad Quao is the successor to Quao with even more wacky rules to follow! Players will try to get rid of their hand as soon as the deck runs out while trying not to break the ever growing number of rules. Break a rule and you, along with everyone ranked lower than you, will take more cards. You're right to think that's unfair, but if you catch someone breaking a rule, you'll be immune. Go mad with power in Mad Quao!

Follow the cycles of the moon in Sky Tango! Players take turns placing cards in stacks and when a stack is five cards tall, you score them. Animals can give you additional turns, and Eclipses can lock up a stack until the correct sun card is played. This game does a great job of combining beautiful cards and elegant rules.

It may sound like a tropical paradise, but Hawaii is a game of strategy and fierce competition. Players must develop their village by using scant resources to finance exploration trips and tiles to increase the value of their village. Balance different forms of currency as you provide for your people in this game of tropical development!

Have you ever played a game about the glass making industry? What about gondolas? Cross off two items from your board gaming bucket list with Murano! Players move gondolas around seven islands just off Venice and take whatever action is at their destination. You can move around gondolas at a price, but you'll need money to establish ownership of shops on the islands. Become the most accomplished glass merchant on these islands with the help of gondolas in Murano.

Meld victims, suspects, evidence, and scenes to find the culprit in Mystery Rummy!  The case files for Jack the Ripper, Murders in the Rue Morgue, Al Capone and the Chicago Underworld, Jekyll & Hyde, and Escape from Alcatraz are all available in this very flavorful Rummy game.

The Creative Whack Pack is a set of sixty-four cards designed to tackle writer's block, get you in a creative mood or just change the way you think. Each card has a new idea, illustration and short anecdote or explanation along with a prompt to get you going. This is an item we've had people asking about for a while now, and we're happy to finally have it available!

Whizizzle Phonics is a great card game for teaching phonics in a game similar to Uno. Match the sounds or change the vowels for the next player, first player to get rid of all their cards wins!

We have a number of returning favorites back in stock this week. Creature Clash, Do It Yourself Boardgames, and Wordie Wars have all found themselves back on our shelves. Make a silly creature such as the Crocmindillo (a mix of crocodile, flamingo and armadillo) in Creature Clash to beat your opponents or maybe try making your own game in Do It Yourself Boardgames. You could always try your hand at building words or spell checking in Wordie Wars, but I'll tell you now that Crocmindillo isn't actually a real word...we checked.

Also, back in stock are the White Mountain jigsaw puzzles and wrought-iron tavern puzzles, so if you've been looking for these puzzles, they're back! We have also expanded our selection of puzzle books. One of the most exciting new books we've received has to be Mazes & Labyrinths: Their History & Development; a book filled with illustrations and some mind-blowing historical mazes!

Games added to our demo library this week are: Whizizzle Phonics, Deus

XCOM: The Board Game is pretty much what it says on the box. XCOM is a board game rendition of the tactical alien defense video game that uses a free app for your smartphone, tablet or computer to keep track of incoming ships or progress on research. We don't normally stock items that require electronic components, but this mechanic fits perfectly with the theme and experience.

[redacted] is a game of intrigue and spycraft for 2-6 players where you are trying to find secret papers and then get away in a helicopter. When you meet other agents, you'll have to choose whether to cooperate or attack them and steal their intel and gadgets. This came in JUST IN TIME for our big spy-tacular game day at the Goethe Institut. Join us there for What do you spy? and try out this game.

Age of War is a quick conquest game set in feudal Japan and made by famous designer Reiner Knizia. At the beginning of the game, fourteen cards are laid out and you must roll dice to capture them, pressing on until an entire line is captured. If you can capture each of a clan's castles, they can't be captured again and you'll earn bonus points in this game of dice and daimyos.

Here's one that folks have been waiting for. In Deus, players take turns constructing buildings on a modular board, laying down cards and making offerings to the gods. When you lay down a card, you activate its special ability along with the abilities of all previous cards you've played of that color. Deus is certainly a great game that only gets better with each card.

Mystery-Dish Diner is a reasoning and deduction game for kids where you have to guess what food is being ordered. Earn money by serving the customer what they want based on the shape, color and temperature of the food they request!
